Print
Methods Type: Generic Methods
Key data
Number: 174
Analyte: Germinative Energy
Matrix: Sorghum
Year of Approval: 2011
Scope: Applicable to whole grain sorghum.
Principle: Sorghum grains are placed on damp filter paper in closed petri dishes and allowed to germinate at a set temperature for set periods of time. The percentage of grains that have germinated at the end of each period is calculated.

Definitions

To produce sorghum malt, it is necessary that a high proportion of sorghum grains in a batch germinate.

Germinative Energy is the percentage of grains which can be expected to germinate if the batch is malted normally at the time of the test.
